How to reduce no-shows in your reservations
A no-show — a booking that does not turn up — is a double loss: the empty table and the guest you turned away because you counted it as taken. You cannot eliminate them entirely, but a few measures cut them a lot. These have the best effort-to-result ratio.
011. Confirm and remind automatically
Most no-shows are not bad faith, they are forgetfulness. A confirmation email on booking and an SMS reminder a few hours before cut forgetting noticeably. If the system sends it on its own, it does not depend on someone remembering to call.
022. Make it easy to cancel
It sounds counter-intuitive, but the easier it is to cancel, the sooner you free the table. Include a cancellation link in the confirmation: a table cancelled in time you can sell again; a no-show you cannot.
033. Ask for a deposit or card in risky cases
You do not need it for every booking. Save the deposit or card hold for large groups, key dates or set menus, which is where a no-show really hurts. Communicating it well also filters out anyone who was not serious.
044. Control real capacity
Taking more bookings than you can serve creates waits, bad reviews and, in the end, more cancellations. A system that works out availability from your shifts and real table capacity avoids overbooking and the domino effect.
055. Own your guests
When bookings come through a portal, the relationship belongs to the portal. If they come through your website or link, the guest is yours: you have their contact to remind them, build loyalty and understand why they fail. You also save the per-cover commission.
066. Measure and adjust
Look at your no-show rate by slot and by day. You may find Friday-night groups fail more and that is where a deposit makes sense, while weekday lunch does not need it. Data turns a hunch into a policy.
No single tactic fixes no-shows; the combination does. Reminders, real capacity and a deposit where it belongs give you tables back every week. In Tablezio, reservations come with real availability from your opening hours and capacity, a waitlist, history and notes for every guest, and a record of deposits for large groups, with no per-cover commission. Guests who leave an email also get an automatic confirmation and a reminder before the booking (24 h by default, configurable), each with a link to cancel in two clicks that frees the table instantly. SMS reminders are coming soon.
